How to Measure a Backyard Route Before Spa Removal

A practical access checklist for gates, turns, surfaces, and the final loading point.

Measure the clear opening, not the distance between fence posts. Hinges, latches, trim, downspouts, and shrubs can reduce usable width. Record the smallest measurement along the entire route. If the tub would need to turn, measure the space available before and after that turn as well.

Photograph the whole path

Take one wide photo from the spa toward the exit, then reverse the view from the gate back toward the spa. Add close photos of steps, retaining walls, soft ground, pavers, air-conditioning equipment, and anything overhead. A complete sequence is more useful than a close-up of the tub alone.

Note the surface underfoot

Grass, gravel, pavers, wet ground, and sloped concrete each change how a heavy shell can be handled. Mark any surface that should not carry concentrated weight. If landscaping or a fence panel might need to move, ask who is responsible before the removal date.

Confirm the loading point

Show where a truck or trailer can legally and safely stop. Include the carry distance from the gate to that point and note parking restrictions, steep driveways, or shared access. The removal route is not complete until the final loading area is accounted for.

Details to record

ItemYour note
Tub length and width
Smallest gate opening
Tightest turn depth
Number of steps
Carry distance to loading point
Surface changes or slopes

Use the notes to define the job

Send the completed details with wide and close photos. Ask the provider to state what is included, what must happen before arrival, and what condition the area will be left in. If a utility, structure, or access question remains open, resolve it before choosing a removal date.

Turn the checklist into a clear scope.

Share the tub type, measurements, photos, and access details. The scope should be clear before a date is set.
